Built in the 14th century in Gothic style, the basilica is famous for its magnificent wooden altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss, considered the largest Gothic altar in the world. The interiors are covered in polychrome frescoes, stained glass windows and vaulted ceilings decorated in blue and gold. Every hour, from the taller tower, a trumpeter plays the Hejnał Mariacki, a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. The melody breaks off abruptly in memory of a trumpeter struck by an arrow during the Mongol invasion of 1241. ## La storia St. Mary's Basilica (Kościół Mariacki) has dominated the Main Market Square of Krakow since the 14th century. Famous for its polychrome wooden altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss between 1477 and 1489, considered the largest Gothic wooden altar in Europe. Every hour, from the basilica's taller tower, a trumpeter plays the Hejnał Mariacki, a melody that breaks off abruptly in memory of a trumpeter struck by a Mongol arrow during the siege of 1241.
