    Wawel Royal Castle stands on the hill of the same name along the banks of the Vistula River, in the heart of Krakow. For over 500 years it served as the official residence of Polish kings and the nation's center of power. Built in the 11th century and expanded in the 16th century in Renaissance style, the castle houses a rich collection of Flemish tapestries, armor and artworks. Wawel Cathedral, attached to the complex, contains the tombs of sovereigns and Polish national heroes. Wawel Hill is considered the most sacred place in Poland and the very symbol of national identity.
